Al Pacino Stars as Joe Paterno in HBO First Look Photo

Pacino will star as the Penn state head football coach who was dismissed from the team in the fallout from the Sandusky sex scandal.

HBO Films has released a first look photo of Al Pacino starring as football coach Joe Paterno in it’s untitled Barry Levinson project.

Pacino will play Joe Paterno, the winningest coach in college football history who becomes tangled in a sexual abuse scandal involving his longtime assistant coach Jerry Sandusky. The scandal challenges his legacy and forces him to face questions of institutional failure on behalf of the victims.

Levinson will direct and executive produce the HBO film along with his producing partners at Levinson/Fontana, Tom Fontana and Jason Sosnoff, and Ed Pressman, Rick Nicita and Lindsay Sloane. Levinson previously directed Pacino in You Don’t Know Jack (2010) for HBO. Pacino won Emmy and Golden Globe awards for his role as Dr. Jack Kevorkian.

The script for the HBO and Sony Pictures Television collaboration will be penned by Debora Cahn (Grey’s Anatomy, The West Wing), John C. Richards (Sahara, Nurse Betty) and David McKenna (SWAT, American History X).

Paterno died in early 2012 of complications from lung cancer. He passed two months after he was fired from his longtime coaching job.
